Phaidros — Second Gnosis¶
A middle-aged scientist who brings both wisdom and volatility. His relationship with Vaughn runs deep — he was close friends with Vaughn's parents before their deaths and views Vaughn as a surrogate son, though his gruff exterior often masks this paternal affection. With Cyrus, he finds intellectual kinship. Yet Phaidros's temperamental nature and hostility toward authority create tension, particularly when the group encounters those who have suffered under the Collective's experiments.
Arc: Confronting his own prejudices and learning that care doesn't require control.
Combat Archetype: Geomancer-Warrior with Wall (Bulwark) secondary paradigm¶
Combat identity. A middle-aged scientist whose temper has somewhere to go in a fight. Phaidros plants himself in the front row in stone-imbued gauntlets and invites the enemy to attack him — every blow he absorbs becomes the fuel for the next one he throws back. He is the volatile mountain: protective and grounded when the party needs him to be, devastating when his patience runs out.
Signature mechanics.
- Stone-Bound Strikes. Phaidros's melee is heavy, slow, and punishing — earth-imbued gauntlet blows that sunder armor, stagger targets, and at high investment crack the tile underneath. Lower attack frequency than a rogue's, higher per-hit weight.
- Provocation & Protection. A small kit of taunts, intercepts, and earth-shaping protective Skills — raising a stone pillar to block a line of fire, pulling an ally one tile back behind him, soaking a hit aimed at a teammate. Used sparingly; he's a hitter who also protects, not a dedicated bodyguard.
- Armor-grant (temporary HP). A defining secondary contribution to party sustain: Phaidros can grant allies an armor layer that absorbs incoming damage before it touches their HP. He doesn't heal — he prevents wounds from landing in the first place.
- The Wall (secondary paradigm). A player who specializes Phaidros toward the Wall paradigm trades raw damage for sustained denial — persistent terrain (stone walls, difficult ground), broader taunts, layered party defenses. Same character, different center of gravity.
Momentum — player-selectable.
- Tremor (default — Geomancer-Warrior). When Phaidros takes a hit and survives, the impact rings through his stance and he gains an extra AP. The more the enemy tries to focus him down, the more he gets to act. Taunting becomes an offensive choice, not just a defensive one.
- Hold the Line (alternative — Wall lean). When Phaidros begins his turn in the front row and has not moved since his last turn, he gains an extra AP. Rewards immovability over aggression.
- Earthbreaker (alternative — aggression lean). When Phaidros's melee staggers, stuns, or knocks back an enemy, he gains an extra AP. Rewards turning defense into pressure.
Apotheosis: Eruption¶
For 4-6 turns, the volcanic side of Phaidros breaks the surface.
- Pressure absorption. Phaidros takes no HP damage. Every hit he would have taken is absorbed as Pressure — a temporary resource that accumulates without limit. (Yes, even fatal damage. The mountain takes everything.)
- Pressure release. On each of his turns, Phaidros spends stored Pressure on Eruption attacks:
- Stone Strike — single-target melee, damage scales with Pressure spent.
- Tectonic Slam — ground-slam AOE around him, damage scales with Pressure spent, applies knockback to survivors.
- Other Eruption variants TBD (vertical pillar finisher, directional stone-blast).
- Tremor still fires. Each absorbed hit still triggers Tremor Momentum — Phaidros gains +AP per hit even though he takes no damage. Apotheosis turns become extraordinarily AP-rich AND Pressure-charged. He's never had more to spend than during Eruption.
Crossplay. Pairs naturally with Cyrus (pushing enemies into Phaidros's hit range during Eruption is a deathblow setup), with Paidi (her Striking Mien aligns with his Pressure-release turns for Sync Momentum), and with the party generally (they can ignore his defense entirely during Eruption and focus pure offense; he is safe for 4-6 turns).
The fantasy: the mountain takes everything, and gives it all back.
Status specialties. Stunned (heavy blows); Immune / armor-grant (party defense). Secondary applier of Restrained (stone pillars) and Staggered (heavy melee strikes).
Role in party. Front-row anchor who turns enemy aggression into his own tempo. Pairs with Cyrus's pushes (he becomes the "resistant terrain" enemies get Crashed into) and gives the squishier characters (Paidi, Adam) a reason the front row exists.
