Paidi — The Mystic

A bawdy monk whose meditation practice is matched only by her drinking habits. Her sheltered upbringing in the Order of Pious Sun's monastic village has left her excessively flirtatious and unconsciously seeking an older father figure — a role that Phaidros initially resists but gradually accepts as their relationship deepens into unexpected romance. Her bubbly exterior and optimistic outlook serve as a reminder of what it means to be young and hopeful.

Arc: Growing from sheltered optimism into tested, resilient faith.

Combat Archetype: Harmonic Monk with Healer secondary paradigm

Combat identity. Paidi fights by tuning herself to the moment and pulling the party into the same key. Her practice is a discipline of resonance — meditation, drink, prayer, and combat are all the same act of harmonizing with whatever is in front of her. In a fight, that translates to Miens: musical-performance stances that don't change what she does so much as what fuels what. She is the rhythm of the party, and a Paidi played well makes everyone else's turns sharper.

Signature mechanics.

  • Harmony (resource). Paidi has a single pool — Harmony — that fuels her abilities. How she generates it and what spending it costs is controlled by her active Mien.
  • Miens (resource stances). Paidi has four Miens, each a real musical-performance marking:

    • Legato (Generator) — "smooth, connected, unbroken." Notes flow into each other without separation. Builds Harmony in one sustained breath; her resting, gathering state.
    • Cantabile (Heal) — "in a singing style." The lyrical voice that mends. Spends Harmony as restorative melody — heals, cures, regen-tiles.
    • Staccato (Strike) — "short, sharp, detached." Percussive damage strikes; each hit a discrete struck note. Converts Harmony into martial damage.
    • Tenuto (Ward) — "held to its full value." Notes that don't break. Persistent defense — taunts, intercepts, layered armor-grants.

Switching Miens is cheap; choosing when is the whole game. - Engaged amplification (passive). When Paidi is on a tile adjacent to any enemy, her current Mien's effects amplify modestly (heal more, strike harder, ward broader, generate more). Rewards bold positioning; her monk training shows up as positional bravery.

Secondary paradigm — The Healer. A player who specializes Paidi down this lane narrows the Mien complexity in favor of dedicated party sustain — wider heals, status cures, persistent regens, the conventional support center. Trades the dynamic stance-juggling for a more readable support role; the party gives up tempo for reliability.

Momentum — player-selectable.

  • Sync (default — Harmonic Monk). When an ally's resolved action aligns with Paidi's current Mien — an ally heals or is healed while she's in Cantabile, an ally lands a strike while she's in Staccato, an ally absorbs a hit while she's in Tenuto, an ally takes any action while she's in Legato — Paidi gains an extra AP. The party that plays in step with her hands her free actions.
  • Cadence (alternative — Mien-switching). When Paidi switches Mien mid-turn, she gains an extra AP. Rewards the player who keeps shifting in response to the fight. (Per-turn cap TBD.)
  • Mercy (alternative — Healer lean). When Paidi heals an ally above a threshold (or cures a status), she gains an extra AP. Rewards specializing toward dedicated sustain.

Apotheosis: Harmonic Resonance

For 4-6 turns, all four Miens are active simultaneously — Paidi generates and spends Harmony in every mode at once, healing as she strikes as she wards. Additionally, the Apotheosis unlocks a fifth mode that only exists in this state: the melee-engagement hybrid layer.

  • Polyphonic Miens. Generator, Heal, Strike, and Ward all resolve in parallel. Every action she takes is simultaneously a generation, a heal, a strike, and a ward — proportioned by what the fight needs.
  • Counterpoint engagement layer. During Apotheosis only, when Paidi is adjacent to an enemy, her actions resolve as hybrid contact actions: heal-on-strike (allies in range are healed by the same blow), strike-on-cure (curing an ally's status damages a nearby enemy), status-on-touch (contact applies a Mien-appropriate status). Outside Apotheosis she's a 4-mode caster; during Apotheosis she becomes the 5-mode harmonic-warrior. This is the only way to experience the engaged-melee mode.

Crossplay. During Apotheosis, Paidi wants to be in melee range — pairs especially with Phaidros holding the front-row protective bubble. A Phaidros Eruption + a Paidi Apotheosis is the party's "everything is fine, we're winning" alignment.

Status specialties. Regenerating (Cantabile heals), Strengthened and Energized (Mien buffs), Immune (Tenuto / Ward Mien). Status cures are also her domain — Paidi is the party's primary cure source.

Role in party. The party's resonator. Her individual contribution is modest; her effect on the rest of the party's turns is large. Pairs best with characters whose actions she can predict — Phaidros holding the line aligns with Tenuto; Cyrus and Vaughn pressuring align with Staccato; a wounded party aligns with Cantabile.
