Chiranjeevi — The Outsider

The elder of the Vanarite tribe. He brings the weight of patient vengeance against the Collective and a desire to free his people from tyranny. His initial antagonism with Phaidros — both men being prideful, and Phaidros having been exposed to anti-Outsider propaganda — gradually transforms into mutual respect.

Arc: Deciding whether vengeance or reconciliation better serves his people's future.

Combat Archetype: Vanarite Shapeshifter with Ammoner secondary paradigm

Combat identity. The elder of the Vanarites practices Vanarism — the discipline of reshaping one's own body. Limited only by conservation of mass and his imagination, Chiranjeevi pays in flesh for what he becomes. Where Paidi's Miens are parallel stances she switches between, Chiranjeevi's transformations are sequential — a chain he walks down a step at a time, becoming progressively more extreme until he resolves it with a finisher. He fights as both a warrior and a weapon-smith of himself.

Signature mechanics.

  • Vanarism (transformation chains). Most of Chiranjeevi's actions advance him along a transformation chain. Each stage has its own attack set, builds on the prior, and ends in a culminating finisher. At the end of the turn the transformation resets — every turn is a fresh chain. The five canon chains:

    • Sweeping — extended limbs into kusarigama-like sweeps → multi-tile reach → spinning AOE finisher. The party's secondary AOE option.
    • Armored — bone-plating across skin → calcified shell → full bone-armor lockdown. The party's tank-flex option, granting Chiranjeevi a per-turn tanking role.
    • Mobility — elongated tendons → quadruped/lupine form → leap-finisher across the field.
    • Visceral — pustular skin → toxic distension → contagion eruption. Applies status effects (Bleed, Poison, Disease) and creates contamination zones; body-horror flavor.
    • Ordnance — calcified finger-launchers → multi-barreled limbs → sustained ballistic-form. The Ammoner paradigm formalized as a chain; pure ranged DPS.

Deferred chains for later canonization: Edged (single-target blade focus) and Sensory (perception, echolocation, anti-stealth). - Brute abilities (chain-breakers). A separate class of Vanarist techniques that exist outside the chain system. Brutes deliver immediate, devastating effects — slam, charge, crush — without chain buildup. The cost: they break the current chain (reset to stage 0) and pay a higher HP price than an equivalent chain stage. The tension is the whole point — commit to walking the chain to its finisher, or blow it up for the payoff now? Brutes don't trigger Progression Momentum; they pair naturally with Homeostasis play (pay HP, regenerate, balance restored). - Flesh cost (HP-as-resource). Transformations and Brutes cost HP. Most are recoverable; the heaviest reduce his max HP for the rest of the fight — a real commitment with real teeth. He can regenerate HP through dedicated transformations, food, or party support.

Secondary paradigm — Ammoner. With Ordnance as a canon chain, the Ammoner paradigm is "the player leans heavily into Ordnance (and to a lesser extent Visceral) chains, building a ranged-focused Chiranjeevi whose body is an arsenal." Pairs with Lione and Euphen as the party's back-row trio.

Momentum — player-selectable.

  • Homeostasis (default — Balance). If Chiranjeevi ends his turn at the same HP he began it, he gains an extra AP. Rewards balance — paying HP for transformations and regenerating back to equilibrium. Punishes both runaway self-harm and runaway healing. Compatible with Brute play.
  • Progression (alternative — Chain-depth). When Chiranjeevi advances his transformation chain to a new stage this turn, he gains an extra AP. Rewards walking the chain deeper — the player who pushes to the finisher is paid back in tempo. Anti-Brute by design (Brutes break chains and don't fire Progression).

Apotheosis: Crimson Vessel

For 4-6 turns, Chiranjeevi is immune to Bleed and to max-HP reduction — transformations no longer cost their fight-long price — and HP paid for transformations is returned as healing or free actions. The Apotheosis is costless Vanarism: chain and reshape without paying. The fantasy is the elder finally letting go of all the discipline that kept him cautious.

Status specialties. Bleed (signature; he both applies and tolerates it), Disease (Visceral chain — new status: stat reduction + spreads to adjacent enemies, distinct from Poison's HP-DoT), Regenerating (self-regen forms), Strengthened (transformation buffs). Secondary applier of Poisoned (Visceral chain — distinct from Disease but related).

Role in party. Versatile mid-line — covers reach, mobility, melee, ranged, AOE, or tank depending on the chain he walks each turn. His variability per-turn rivals Lione's variability per-combat. Strong in messy, swing-y fights where he can pick the chain that answers the moment; weaker against rigid encounters that demand sustained commitment to one role. Pairs especially well with Paidi — her healing after his flesh-cost transformations triggers his Homeostasis Momentum.
