Euphen — Extended Origin (out-of-scope background)

Sequestered reference — not load-bearing

This page collects the deep backstory of Euphen's origin and his nature as a reality-wanderer. Almost none of it is relevant to the main story. It is retained only for internal consistency. Neither the story nor Euphen's characterization should lean on this material beyond how his metaphysics inform his combat and demeanor. For the in-scope character, see Euphen — The Wanderer.

Origin in the higher reality

Euphen originates in the higher reality from which Skyne, this world's demiurge, came — the plane above this one. His childhood there was unhappy, marked by a strained relationship with a father figure who never trusted his parentage. The one keepsake he carries from his mother — a pendant of strange make — is bound up with his eventual escape.

(This reframes an earlier, deprecated conception of Euphen that used a science-fiction framing — an "Intergalactic Union," quantum-entanglement world-hopping, and the names "San'Kyne / San'Thradenar." That framing is retired; the names and sci-fi mechanics are not canon.)

Untethering and the wandering

Direct exposure to the spaces between worlds, together with the pendant and his proximity to the divine, untethered him from his native reality. Since then he has drifted endlessly from world to world, never staying and never belonging, arriving in this world as merely one more leg of a very long journey. He greets each new world with delight — its food, its cultures, its people — and leaves each behind.

The secret of Skyne

Euphen is the only person in this plane who knows that Skyne returned to the higher reality and died there, leaving behind only an echo — the presence the Eidolons mistake for the original. He has had no one to share this with and no particular reason to break his silence.

Handling note: in-story this should remain a light touch. It is characterization and metaphysical backdrop, not a plot engine.

A brother in this world (this part IS plot-relevant)

Unlike the rest of this page, the following is load-bearing for the main story. Euphen has an unnamed brother, also a wanderer out of the higher reality, who reached this world before the Disruption and gave the Sophronoi Elders partial knowledge of how to supplant an Archē. He is the secondary actor behind the Disruption (the Collective and the Archē of Humility being the primary), and almost certainly the figure the Sophronoi remember as the Master of Those Who Know, whose visitation they call the Enlightenment. Because the knowledge he gave was only ever partial, the ceremony runs ahead of its makers' understanding.

Open: his name, his motive for arming the Elders, his current whereabouts, and what (if anything) Euphen knows or feels about a brother loose in this world. The brother's role in the plot is canon; Euphen's personal connection to him should stay a deliberate, slow reveal. Tracked in Open Questions — Story.

Source texture adapted from docs/story/characters/playable/Euphen_The_Wanderer.md (which uses the deprecated cosmology) and reconciled to current canon.
